Large companies aren’t often created overnight: yet that is exactly what happened when AbbVie, a 29,000-strong global organisation, was born as an independent company in 2013.
Our journey since then to create a unique company culture has seen us rise to 19th in the UK’s Best Workplaces (Large Company) ranking, as announced on 3 May 2017 by Great Place to Work®. This position, one of the highest for any pharmaceutical company in the UK, has been achieved through a series of focused and innovative approaches that have made AbbVie a partner and employer of choice in this crowded sector.
Trust and confidence have been our watchwords as we’ve grown. With our more focused portfolio, it was important to ensure that AbbVie people still had access to a breadth of opportunities to develop and gain new skills. Helping people reach their potential is part of who we are, so we created a range of online and in-person support communities, secondment opportunities and in-role development that have let people spread their wings in a supportive and safe environment.
Along with development, work-life balance was shown in the surveys to be of the highest importance to AbbVie people. In response to feedback, we improved our flexible working policy to allow employees to work with their managers to develop a working pattern that meets each individual’s needs.
We have a set of behaviours that guide our work, because we believe it’s not just what we do, but how we do it that matters: because patients everywhere depend on us.
We’re proud to have achieved our highest yet ranking in the Best Workplaces™ programme: it’s a testament that our culture is working. We want to attract the best talent, to bring them in and let them fly. We’re committed to being more agile than the traditional perception of a pharma company, and in eliminating barriers and streamlining process wherever possible.
